Recruitment and Training

 

Recruitment and training are critical aspects of building a successful restaurant, bar, or café team. A well-trained and motivated staff can enhance customer satisfaction, drive operational efficiency, and contribute to the overall success of the operation.  

Important factors:

  • Define the Job Roles with job descriptions.
  • Determine the best channels to promote your hiring needs.
  • Review applications and resumes. Keep in mind that sometimes good people don’t have the experience you're looking for.  But you can train them.
  • In-person interviews to determine cultural fit, commitment to great service, and behavioral patterns.
  • Reference Checks.
  • Decisions and offers


Now comes the onboarding. The first 2 days are important to welcome the new team member to the operation.  Things to remember:

  • A tour and orientation.
  • Mentoring, shadowing, and on-the-job training.
  • Feedback and evaluations.
  • Recognition and Incentives.


Training and recruitment are ongoing processes.  You should always be looking for that next superstar.  Be sure to be realistic.  Don’t over-promise or paint a pretty picture.  Staff members will become discouraged and look for other opportunities.  Retention is critical.  Staff turnover costs hundreds of dollars for each person that doesn’t work out.  Set consistent evaluation periods.
